Central Govt. Amends EDLI Scheme

Central Govt. amends EDLI scheme

Central Government notified the Employees’ Deposit-Linked Insurance (Amendment) Scheme, 2025,  on July 18, 2025, which amends the Employees’ Deposit-Linked Insurance Scheme, 1976 ( “EDLI Scheme”) under the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952. The amendment introduces key changes to assurance benefits payable upon the death of an employee. First, a minimum assurance benefit of Rs. 50,000/- will now be payable even if the employee’s average provident fund balance in the preceding 12 months or during membership is less than Rs. 50,000/-. Second, for calculating continuous service eligibility, a gap of up to 60 days between two periods of employment will be ignored, allowing such service periods to be treated as continuous. Third, if a member dies in service within 6 months of the last contribution received and is still on the employer’s rolls, the assurance benefit under the Scheme will be payable.
