How should new managers identify quick wins without losing focus on long-term goals?
SL: Quick wins are great. They develop confidence and credibility within the organization. They are, therefore, always a wise place to focus on. It shows you mean business; you are clear about your actions, and serious in your intent.
However, the bigger and more complex challenges often need a longer-term focus. One advice I have is to ask yourself a few of these questions each week:
- What have I done that moves the needle for the organization?
- What hard problems am I not yet addressing?
- What difficult conversations am I not having as yet?
- 18 months from now, will what I have done this week matter?
All these are ways to reconnect with what’s really important in your role.
