The name Udai signifies the rising sun, a symbol of positivity, hope, energy, light, and well-being for all living beings. Dr. Udai Pareek truly embodied the essence of his name. His contributions to the field of HR and organizational development are not just influential but will continue to guide generations to come. As an architect of the HR function in India, a globally renowned psychologist, a visionary institution builder, and, above all, a noble soul, his impact is immeasurable. Though it is impossible to encapsulate his vast contributions in a single note, this is a humble attempt to honour his legacy by sharing my invaluable learnings from his books, institutions, and personal interactions with him.
Passion for Knowledge Creation and Dissemination in Human and Organizational Development
As a student, the first book I encountered was Designing and Managing HRM Systems. It was a fascinating experience to read a book co-authored by two legendary figures who laid the foundation for India’s first HR department. The book served as a comprehensive encyclopaedia, offering deep insights into HR systems-their composition, functioning, design, and evolution.
This masterpiece provided a clear blueprint of HR’s role in an organization, from employee entry to exit, emphasizing a developmental approach. At a time when personnel departments primarily focused on labour laws and manpower management, Dr. Pareek’s work introduced a paradigm shift by positioning HR as a key driver of organizational growth and employee development. This perspective left an indelible mark on my understanding of HR.
Selfless Contribution to Research and Knowledge for the Greater Good
One of Dr. Pareek’s most cherished works is Instruments in HR and OD, a book thatI first referred to in 2000 and continue to use to this day. It is astonishing to imagine the immense dedication and effort he invested in creating this invaluable resource for the HR and OD community.
Dr. Pareek’s unparalleled vision positioned HR and OD as critical functions in organizational success. His global experiences, translated into this educational toolkit, provided a structured approach to analysing behavioural processes at individual, group, and organizational levels. His work, shared selflessly, has empowered countless professionals to enhance their understanding of HR and OD practices.
Pioneering Contributions to the Motivational Paradigm of Development
Two groundbreaking concepts we owe to Dr. Pareek are Role Efficacy and Extension Motivation. Extension motivation is defined as the intrinsic need to go beyond oneself, relate to larger groups, and contribute to collective goals. He proposed that a superordinate goal could activate this motive, fostering harmony and sustaining individuals’ motivation for development and effectiveness.According to him, the psychological involvement is an essential condition for role efficacy as well as to organisational citizenship behaviour.
He introduced 10 steps of role efficacy, which were broadly summarised under three components: Role making, Role centring, and Role Linking. This enabled leaders and organisations to firstly become aware of behavioural aspects of role effectiveness and how organisations can work towards making them more effective.
In his article on the Motivational Paradigm for Development, Dr. Pareek introduced a simple yet profound formula:
Development = (Achievement Motivation × Extension Motivation) – Dependence Motivation
He explained this paradigm by stating:
“Motivation drives human behaviour, and to that extent, it influences changes in a community-whether through increased entrepreneurial activity or the adoption of new methods. However, I do not view motivation as the primary cause of societal change. Instead, it is a crucial and dynamic link in the causal cycle of human evolution.”
Strengthening institutions to enable future community development
A universe of his knowledge and rich experiences was made available through his writings, but he could foresee that this wouldn’t be long lasting, and hence, he was instrumental in laying foundations and proving support and direction to institutions that would strengthen the community and continue the knowledge dissemination and co-learning. National HRD Network, HR Labs, IIHMR, ISABS, HRD International, Board of the Global community of Organisation Development, Psychological Association of Andhra Pradesh and New Delhi to name a few.
Humble, humane, and thought leader
I cherish my few experiences where he taught me how to analyse an assessment tool most simply and engagingly, enabling young consultants like me to learn that tool forever. His humbleness and humane touch, despite such achievements, made him stand out from the league and inspired immensely. People who had the experience of meeting or working with him do share his charming and humble personality and how he touched people with his genuine concern and affection.
Another unique quality he had was a progressive mind, which broke the stereotypes and led by example. His decision to abolish any rituals after his death and choosing his body be donated to medical college set an example of how one dedicated life can serve the community till his last breath.
Dr. Udai Pareek’s legacy continues to shape the HR and OD landscape, inspiring professionals worldwide. His work remains a testament to his vision, intellect, and selfless dedication to the development of individuals, organizations, and communities.
