The character of mass media has affected the nature of public communication dramatically. Paper and pen which used to be the ‘warhorse’, as it were, of communication, have been relegated to a supportive position with reference to visual medium. One may even add the audio medium to the list of influencers.
This is significant because the nature of literacy has changed its emphasis. The old principle of reading and writing arithmetic has given place to visual symbols.
Whereas the communication patterns are evolving, it has not yet sufficiently significantly percolated to institutional learning in kindergarten or, for that matter, even the school level. However, the inputs are undergoing drastic changes. Instructional patterns, what is heard or seen, is becoming the carrier of information more abundantly than, say, it was two decades ago. The electronic media has much to do with it.
