Apprentice stipend 84% higher than minimum wages
In an interesting revelation by a study, the amount of stipend paid to apprentices employed in companies in Gujarat is higher than the minimum wages paid across several sectors.
The study which has been conducted by a Vadodara-based varsity – TeamLease Skills University, reveals that the minimum stipend paid to apprentices is roughly 41% higher than the applicable minimum wages in majority of the sectors across different Indian cities.
According to the study, Gujarat is one of the highest paying states and the automobile and allied industries sector as well as the retail sector emerged as the top paying sectors for apprentices in the state.
For instance, the stipend payouts made by employers across sectors during FY2017-18 for the automobile sector ranged from Rs 7,500 to Rs 11,300 per month while the same for Information Technology (IT) and IT-enabled services (ITES) sector ranged from Rs 7,600 to Rs 12,400 per month.
Further, as per the analysis in the study, postgraduate and engineering graduates are paid significantly higher stipends than diploma holders in Ahmedabad and Gujarat.
“Graduate technicians are the best paid across sectors, with quality technicians and production engineers being paid the highest stipend in the city. Trade and tech apprentices are paid significantly higher in sectors like automobile and allied industries and manufacturing sector,” the study further added.
Sumit Kumar, vice-president of the varsity said, “While currently the adoption is concentrated to fewer sector, the growing optimism coupled with the right initiatives made by the government will encourage better participation. It will instil confidence in the talent community also to participate in the program.”
