UP Govt. withdraws 12 hours shift working order
According to various media reports, the Uttar Pradesh government has withdrawn its controversial order of 12-hour shifts for workers in industrial units, against the usual 8-hour day, after a notice from the Allahabad High Court on a PIL filed against the order challenging its validity.
This withdrawl of 12 hours shift working order will have no impact on proposed ordinance exempting labour laws for three years as part of its strategy to attract investments from China post Covid-19 disruptions.
However, increase in working hours in industrial units was through a separate executive order which now stands withdrawn.
The notification was issued on 8th may thereby giving exemptions from Sec. 51, 54,56 and 59 of factories Act. The said order stands withdrawn by order dated 15th may.
It means that as heretofore the factories will have to run only in 8 hours shift, with maximum overtime in150 hours a quarter and lunch break after maximum of 5 hours.
