USSW Alumni Meet: Promoting closer ties between social work education and practice

The essence of social work lies in effective alignment and liasioning between theory, education and practice and it proved to be an apparent feature of the Udaipur School of Social Work resulting in successfully and continuously producing vibrant leaders of HR and development sector. The alumni meet and the conference on Global Trends of HR was more than sufficient to provide a glimpse of success journey of the USSW. The eldest alumni and the ex-Principal of the Udaipur School of Social Work (USSW), Dr. Raj Bhanti inaugurated the alumni meet of the USSW on 13th August 2017 at Shauryagarh Palace, Udaipur, Rajasthan in which 150 HR Professionals and Development Professionals across the country actively participated with the agenda to support and strengthen the students and alumni of the College. The program started with a national anthem followed by a marvelous show of a movie showing decadal journey of the college making the participants overwhelmed with emotions raised due to their old memories.

This one day seminar and Alumni Meet, with focus on Global HR trends, was organized by the USSW Alumni Society with the very objective to strengthen the ties between Industry and Institute, and also to encourage collaborations of alumni and institute aiming at excellence for USSW by focusing on the capacity building of students as HR and development professionals. The panel discussion was moderated by Dr. GP Rao with participation from Mr. S.S. Sahrawat, Sr. Alumni of USSW and the Director and CEO at HR Consulting Firm, former SVP Corp. Head (HR), Jubilant Limited; Dr. Rajeshwari Narendran - Director at Academy of HRD and Professor at MLSU; and Mr. Prashant Rao, AVP - HR, Reliance Industries Limited as the keynote speakers.

Dr. GP Rao while initiating the panel discussion focused on the challenges for HR and shared the trends for the future work place requirements. Mr. Sahrawat stressed on the applications of social work models and methods with focus on case work and group work for effective facilitation, counselling and building employee engagements. Dr. R. Narendran shared the need and challenges for HR professionals to continuously update the functional know how with focus on capacity and skill building for HR professionals. Mr. Prashant Rao stressed upon the growing importance of understanding and mastering the business know how for building the strong business partnerships  and  building the HR profession through customizing the HR solutions as required for business to grow and align with the organizational objectives.

The panel discussion was followed by focused group discussion on strengthening the quality of education, infrastructure development, research & technology development, placement of the students, and alumni contribution for overall development of the institute. The relevance of curriculum of the college in context of present scenario was analyzed, followed with a rigorous exercise to make it optimal useful for the upcoming professionals.

HR Head, IGL; Mr. Satyender Gaur, VP- HR, Adani Wilmar Limited; Mr. Karamveer Yadav, IR Head and AVP, Omex Auto Ltd; Mr. Harish Joshi, GM-IR, Gujrat Ambuja Exports; Mr. Ajay Ranga, GM-HR, Binani Cement Ltd; Mr. Ravish Sharma, Zonal HR Head, Adani Wilmar Limited; Dr. SS Daiya, Sr. Manager-P&A, RSMM Ltd; Mr. Kapil Vyas, Sr. Manager-P&A, Wonder Cement; Mr. Bhopal Singh Patrawat, Sr. Manager-HR, RSMM Ltd.; Mr. Nishant Kalra etc. entered into an introspective discussion for strengthening the excellence of the institute. Important inputs were also given by Dr. Rajbhanti, Mr. Zahid Mohammad (Welfare Commissioner), Mr. Shakiluddin Siddiqui, Mr.  Nitin Raj Bhatnagar (VP-HR, Banswara Syntex), Dr. Komal Ganotra (Director, CRY, New Delhi), Mr. Mohan Vajpayee, Ms. Sunita Jindal, Mr. Dinesh Vyas (State Incharge, CASA, Rajasthan), NS Chundawat, Rinku Parihar, Jyoti Acharya, Mukesh, Sumer Singh Meena, Naveen Yadav, Vikash Goyal and Satyajeet Tyagi, etc.

It was a multifaceted programme making the participants playing games while making fun during the warm up session which was convened by Mr. Neeraj Bhardwaj and Ms. Monika Bhatt from Blue Wisdom. Dr. Vineeta Srivastava, the Founder Secretary of the USSW Alumni Society presented the journey of the Society from its inception and formal registration (in 2002) till date while describing the initiatives of the society. She also presented a tentative plan of action for strengthening the alumni society and the way forward for sustenance of the initiatives identified.

Dr. S.K. Mishra, the present Principal of the College thanked all the participants for their contributions and shared his commitment of building string netwith the alumni on all the identified areas to strive for excellence in quality cadre building from the Udaipur School of Social Work. The current cadre of the faculty members of the USSW, including Dr. Avnish Nagar, Dr. Lala Ram Jat, Dr. Naval Singh Rajput and Miss. Anukriti, hasshown ample interest and assured their commitment to support the aim.

The Hon. Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr. S.S. Sarangdevot blessed the occasion by sending his wishes in narration which were shared by Dr. Sunil Choudhary and he readily accepted the responsibility to coordinate between the alumni and the college for excellence in different endeavor.

The initiation, design and execution of the alumni meet was spearheaded by Mr. Jitender Singh Yadav, HR, Ford India Pvt. Ltd., Mr. Vikrant Singh, Unit HR Manager, Coca Cola Industries and Mr. Naveen, HR Executive from USSW who received a standing ovation from the participants for the hard work, dedication and zeal to make this meet possible. Ms. Reetika along with team Pankaj, Bharat, Gireesh received a vote of appreciations for the excellent work of taking the participants to their memory lane. At the end, the present students of the college expressed their gratitude towards the participants by presenting mementos to the alumni. The meet ended with a tag line 'let me give confidence to you' with a commitment to undertake the journey of excellence for USSW. The alumni meet and a day long interaction ended with a collective commitment to preserve old ties and emotional bonding for strengthening the success of the organizational and professional endeavors.
