Management lessons from RAAJI Movie

RAAJI a film directed by Meghna Gulzar also has something for HR professionals to take out. Following learning can be drawn:

1- Hire for values and attitude and train for skills- When it comes to any People issue in the organisation, it goes back to the basic- hiring and selection process. Whether we hired the person correctly. Does the attitude and value system of a person fit in to the value system of the organisation? It is always preferable to prefer person’s attitude and values over his functional/technical skills because, functional skills can be imparted but attitude and values are hard to change. In the movies, when sahmat father asked her to do spying for the country in Pakistan, India’s intelligence person Khalid Mir, role played by jaideep ahlawat talks to her and assess her attitude and values. Sahmat says that it was in her DNA to keep the nation’s interest above all but nothing know about what you want her to perform. She has that attitude and values to put her life in danger even for serving the nation but does not know the danger and skills of the job. Intelligence person selected her only on the basis of her attitude and values. He says, we will impart you training and functional skills. She was put under rigorous training and sent for the job which she performs well even at some point, beyond their expectations. So, If the person has desire and commitment along with required attitude and values, he can be trained for any task.


2- Organisation’s Interest first, people second- One should not compromise with his/her basic values for the interest of the organisation. It is expected from the people in the organisation to sacrifice/compromise their all own basic values for the interest of the organisation. There are many people who do that but many refuse to do that. At last in film, when sahmat after observing the danger, changes her burqa with that other lady in the shop and sent her in car with child as cover and she comes in a different auto Rikshaw, and see that her own Indian counterpart Khalid Mir orders fire at that lady with understanding that it was sahmat and shell bomb on the persons there causing death to that lady and sahmat’s husband. For Indian counterpart Khalid Mir, it was a task either to bring back sahmat to India or neutralise all including her and close the chapter once for all. And he did that without smelling that the lady was not sahmat. When sahmat reaches to Khalid Mir in an abandoned house, He was shocked to see her alive. Sahmat asks why they killed her husband and that  lady as Sahmat. It was not agreed at all. Why they wanted to kill her. It was shattering moments for Sahmat, where she was struggling with her own values. Then Indian Intelligence person Khaild Mir says, JUNG MEIN NA TUM TUM HO AUR NA MAIN MAIN. YEH SIRF JUNG HAI.


Sahmat understands the reality how things work and how dynamics change but she sticks to her values. She asks Khalid Mir to take her out to India where she refuses to get aborted the child of her Pakistani husband. Because he also upheld the values of love which do not allow anyone to harm the person to whom you love. Her husband could have killed her then and there, the moment he came to know about her spying, but only informed the agency.


So, the lesson is that don’t get emotionally involved so much with your task that causes imbalance in your life and feel cheated because you don’t know when you become an unwanted luggage for your organisation. In business nothing works except necessity and utility.
